Barnes stu­died with Har­ry B. Jep­son and Ho­ra­tio Park­er at Yale Un­i­ver­si­ty (1910-1911), then with Lou­is Verne, Vin­cent D’Indy and Abel De­caux in Par­is. He went on to play the or­gan at Church of the In­car­na­tion, New York (1911-1912); Rut­gers Pres­by­ter­i­an Church, New York (1913-1924); St. Ste­phen’s Epis­co­pal Church, Phil­a­del­phia, Penn­syl­van­ia (1924-1938); and the First Pres­by­ter­ian Church, San­ta Mon­i­ca, Cal­i­for­nia (1938-). He was al­so a com­pos­er, pro­duc­ing or­gan sym­pho­nies, ar­range­ments, and books of re­li­gious mu­sic, and served in the Na­val Re­serve dur­ing World War I. His works in­clude:
