Chatfield was educated at Charterhouse School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was Bell’s University Scholar and Members’ Prizeman. He graduated in 1831, winning a first class in classical honors. Taking Holy Orders in 1832, he served as Vicar of Stotfield, Bedfordshire (1833-1847) and Vicar of Much-Marcle, Herefordshire (1847-?). His works include:
