Davies went to work in the brick­fields at age eight, work­ing his way up to be­come de­pu­ty man­a­ger. His re­ceived his mu­sic­al train­ing from Jo­seph Owen, school mas­ter of Rhos; he event­u­al­ly com­posed 200 piec­es, and ed­it­ed Cerddor y Tonic Sol-ffa. He was or­dained a Meth­od­ist min­is­ter in 1895, and went to Swan­sea to take charge of Smyr­na cha­pel, Plas­marl.
