Davies went to work in the brickfields at age eight, working his way up to become deputy manager. His received his musical training from Joseph Owen, school master of Rhos; he eventually composed 200 pieces, and edited Cerddor y Tonic Sol-ffa. He was ordained a Methodist minister in 1895, and went to Swansea to take charge of Smyrna chapel, Plasmarl.
