Dexter at­tend­ed Yale Un­i­ver­si­ty and An­do­ver The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­ary, and was a lead­ing au­thor­i­ty on the Pil­grims of Ply­mouth Col­o­ny. A mem­ber of the North Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church in New Bed­ford, Mass­a­chu­setts, he com­mut­ed to Bos­ton, where he ed­it­ed The Con­gre­ga­tion­a­list mag­a­zine.
