Ela grad­u­at­ed from Wes­ley­an Un­i­ver­si­ty, with honors, in 1857, and entered the Amer­i­can Meth­od­ist Episcopal ministry in 1860. In 1876, he earned his Doctor of Di­vin­i­ty de­gree from Cornell Un­i­ver­si­ty. For two years he was principal of the East Greenwich Sem­in­a­ry.
