Gadsby was a chor­is­ter at St. Paul’s Ca­thed­ral (1849-1858), and or­gan­ist at St. Pe­ter’s, Brock­ley, un­til 1884, when he suc­ceed­ed John Hull­ah at Queen’s Coll­ege, Har­ley Street, Lon­don. In 1880, he be­came a pro­fess­or at the Guild­hall School of Mu­sic.
