Son of the Curate at Hawley, Gillett was educated at Westminster School and Keble College, Oxford (BA 1896). He was ordained a deacon in 1898, and priest in 1899. While domestic chaplain to Earl Beauchamp at Madresfield, he contributed three translations and a hymn to the 1906 English Hymnal.
