Haywood lived most of his life in In­di­an­a­po­lis, In­di­ana. He was the on­ly prom­i­nent black Pen­te­cost­al preach­er in the Fin­ished Work branch of the move­ment, which be­came the As­sem­blies of God and the Pent­e­cost­al Church of God. He event­u­al­ly be­came as­sociated with an un­or­tho­dox group that de­nied the Trin­i­ty and left the As­sem­blies of God for the Pen­te­cos­tal As­sem­blies of the World, where became the first presiding bishop.
