Daughter of a watchmaker, Heede studied in Paris, where she lived with a Methodist family and became a professing Christian. When she returned to Norway, she became a tutor at a girls school in Arendal. In 1874 she was called to Christiania (Oslo), and the Methodist publishing house and schools. She taught future preachers in English and Norwegian, edited the the Sunday School paper Den lille børneven, and translated books for the the Methodist publishing house. Around this, time she started translating hymns and Gospel songs from English into Norwegian, introducing Ira Sankey and others to Norwegian audiences. She wrote and translated more than 200 hymns.
