Born in the Ozark foot­hills, Hick­man moved to In­de­pen­dence, Mis­sou­ri, at age 16, and stu­died mu­sic with in­struct­ors in near­by Kan­sas Ci­ty. He came to Christ at age 20, and stu­died at the Moo­dy Bi­ble In­sti­tute in Chi­cago, Il­li­nois, where he met his wife. They served in the evan­gel­ism field to­ge­ther un­til her death in 1942. Ro­ger went on to serve as di­rect­or of mu­sic and Christ­ian ed­u­ca­tion at church­es in Lou­i­si­a­na and Flor­i­da. He di­rect­ed the Mu­sic De­part­ment at the Bap­tist Bi­ble In­sti­tute in Lake­land, Flor­i­da (1949-1953), and wrote over 100 Gos­pel songs. He and Ar­thur McKee com­piled the first vol­ume of Ta­ber­na­cle Hymns in 1916.
