Maccall earned a Mas­ter of of Arts de­gree from the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Glas­gow, then stu­died the­ol­o­gy in Ge­ne­va, Switz­er­land. Or­dained a Un­i­tar­i­an min­is­ter, he pas­tored in Bol­ton, Lan­cas­ter (1837-40) and Cred­ton, De­von­shire (1841-6), then moved to Lon­don. His works in­clude:
