Maccall earned a Master of of Arts degree from the University of Glasgow, then studied theology in Geneva, Switzerland. Ordained a Unitarian minister, he pastored in Bolton, Lancaster (1837-40) and Credton, Devonshire (1841-6), then moved to London. His works include:
