A home mission worker, MacGill studied at the University in Glasgow. For a while he worked with Dr. Barnardo among the orphans in London. The major part of his life he spent on mission work in the center of Manchester. From 1884 to 1900, he managed to build 24 meeting houses or assemblies in the city.
