A home miss­ion work­er, MacGill stu­died at the Uni­ver­si­ty in Glas­gow. For a while he worked with Dr. Bar­nar­do among the or­phans in Lon­don. The ma­jor part of his life he spent on miss­ion work in the cen­ter of Man­ches­ter. From 1884 to 1900, he man­aged to build 24 meet­ing hous­es or as­sem­blies in the ci­ty.
