Walmsley moved to Sale in 1870, where he worked as a jew­el­er. A Con­gre­ga­tion­al­ist, he was for 28 years con­nect­ed with the work of the Man­chester S. S. Un­ion, ma­ny of his hymns be­ing writ­ten for the an­nu­al Whit-week Fes­tiv­al. His works in­clude:
