Clarke grad­u­at­ed from Har­vard Coll­ege (arts, 1829; di­vin­i­ty, 1833). Af­ter or­din­a­tion as a Un­i­tar­i­an min­is­ter, he pas­tored at Lou­is­ville, Ken­tucky (1833-1840); at the Church of the Dis­ci­ples, Bos­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts (1841-1850); and from 1853. While in Lou­is­ville, he ed­it­ed for a while The West­ern Mes­sen­ger. His works in­clude:
