Clarke graduated from Harvard College (arts, 1829; divinity, 1833). After ordination as a Unitarian minister, he pastored at Louisville, Kentucky (1833-1840); at the Church of the Disciples, Boston, Massachusetts (1841-1850); and from 1853. While in Louisville, he edited for a while The Western Messenger. His works include:
