Died: Oc­to­ber 6, 1866, Kosh­tea, In­dia (on the Gan­ges Ri­ver).

Cotton’s fa­ther, Cap­tain Thom­as Cot­ton, was killed in ac­tion the year he was born. George was ed­u­cat­ed at West­min­ster and at Trin­i­ty Coll­ege (BA 1836). He served as as­sist­ant mas­ter at Rug­by School (1837-1852). In 1852, he be­came Head­mas­ter at Marl­bo­rough. In 1858, he was ap­point­ed Bi­shop of Cal­cut­ta, suc­ceed­ing Dr. Daniel Wilson. How­ev­er, Cotton nev­er as­sumed the du­ties of his post, as he drowned dis­em­bark­ing from his ship.
