Born: October 29, 1813, Chester, England. Died: October 6, 1866, Koshtea, India (on the Ganges River). |
Cotton’s father, Captain Thomas Cotton, was killed in action the year he was born. George was educated at Westminster and at Trinity College (BA 1836). He served as assistant master at Rugby School (1837-1852). In 1852, he became Headmaster at Marlborough. In 1858, he was appointed Bishop of Calcutta, succeeding Dr. Daniel Wilson. However, Cotton never assumed the duties of his post, as he drowned disembarking from his ship.
