Osler began his career as a physician, at Guy’s Hospital in London, and the Swansea Infirmary. However, he quickly migrated to the literary field. For some time he was associated with the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, in both London and Bath. In 1841, he became editor of the Royal Cornwall Gazette, and moved to Truro.
