Son of James Baker, Chancellor of the Diocese of Durham, Henry was educated at Winchester, Cooper’s Hill, and Exeter College, Oxford (BMus 1867). He worked as a civil engineer, especially in building railroads in India. He is sometimes confused with Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877).
